Paperclip Dress??

Greetings, earthlings! I have once again slipped into the barely traversable fog that is my school life. I tried my hardest to plan this quarter so that I wouldn't be up until 2 a.m. every night finishing articles, but, to put it simply, I failed miserably. My current projects include: designing a dress around a paper clip (I kid you not), a magazine article on young women vegetarians & a disgusting amount of ART HISTORY READING. So, on the off occasion that I do get to go out and spend time with friends, I try and play dress up as best I can. This past weekend, I was feeling nautical stripes and my blazer. I thank my roommate for the waves in my hair. She works that curling iron like nobody's business.

Here is version #1 of my paperclip inspired dress. Now I hear you all wondering aloud, "I don't see a paperclip..." It's about INSPIRATION, people. (And yes, I did cut Scarlet Johnansson's head out of Marie Claire magazine)

So how was everybody's weekend? (I just got my camera back, my sister took it to Vegas, so my goal is more outfit posts like I did in the past!!)

I'm just messing around with the photo editing apps on my newly purchased iPhone. It's quite exciting to own a device that can do so much. I sent an email while walking to class to the other day and when I told my roommate of this fascinating experience, she simply smirked and said, "Um... welcome to 2011." Well excuse me. I was that person who clung to my old-brick-mobile-talking-device for dear life, despite it's clear non acceptance in the 21st century. But whatever, enough tech-talk. If I have to be that girl who wears sandals in 40 degree weather, then so be it! You've left me no other choice. Here's to hoping your weather is better than mine!

Buckeye Pride in the Fashion World

So Nary asked me for the article I wrote about him, so I figured hell why not post it to my blog too. I told you guys I would, so here you go! If any of you are brave, read on! If you have the attention span of a chihuahua, then maybe this post isn't for you. But I can guarantee this: you'll be missing out on an inspirational life story... and we could all use one of those!

In a sea of black, there is a solitary splash of bright red. Closer observation reveals a T-shirt emblazoned with nine large, white letters reading OHIO STATE.

It is New York Fashion Week and the shirt is unconventional to the illustrious scene, but its wearer is finding himself well received by the fashion world he has long dreamed to be apart of, a world universes away from the one in which he grew up.

Nary Manivong just presented his first collection with design partner Ally Hilfiger, and as they stand hand-in-hand in front of photographers, Manivong wears his Ohio State shirt with a wide smile. While he keeps a firm grip, literally, on his hard earned New York City success, his shirt establishes a connection to his hometown roots which, ironically enough, he doesn’t technically have.

The Laotian-American designer, who grew up in Columbus, became homeless by the age of 14, eventually separated from his siblings and was left to fend for himself. Instead of disassociating with Columbus and his rough past, however, Manivong has made a name for himself in fashion while embracing his hometown and all those who have supported him along his challenging journey.

Stolen Goods

Greetings from the library, friends! I ~~stole~~ borrowed these awesome glasses from my mom. She's out of town this weekend, which means her wardrobe is a free for all! She remodeled my bedroom into a closet the second I moved out, so really I consider this an open 24-hour invitation to shop. Sorry about the crap quality of my webcam, my laptop is sort of old, but I love it anyway. You should also notice that I'm rocking my awesome DRESSED t-shirt, which I did not, in fact, "steal." I bought it myself, thank you very much! I get so many questions about it!

I also took this from the back of my mom's makeup cabinet. Any idea how to use it? It's called Chanel Sheer Illuminator. I can't find any verifiable information on the internet how to properly use it. It seems to be a makeup base? All I know is that is smells amazing.

Maybe I should let it be known that my mom, my sister & I share everything. So me taking these things from home really isn't a big deal. It's awesome that we're all relatively the same size and enjoy the same products, because we can each make an outfit or an accessory our own and not to mention it's a huge money saver!

P.S. I'm finishing my feature story on Nary Manivong this week. So hopefully it will be good enough to share with you all. I've been working hard on it, I want to do him justice!

NAHM in Columbus

As I mentioned two posts ago, I am doing my final feature project on Nary Manivong - co-creator of NAHM, the line he and Ally Hilfiger recently debuted during NYFW. He is from Columbus, Ohio (where I live) and as luck would have it, he came back this weekend for the premiere of the documentary "Dressed," which depicts the real struggles of venturing into the fashion business through Nary's personal story; his tireless attempts to put on his first fashion show without any financial backing (among a slew of other afflictions). For me, it was a movie about perseverance, but also about how far supportive friends and a positive attitude can take you in life.

His story is heartbreaking, inspirational but most importantly it's totally genuine. There are no pretenses with him.

After meeting him (and Ally! who is ever-smiling and friendly as can be) and getting to know him a little bit over the next couple days,

I can honestly say I have never met a more sincere, gracious or deserving person.

And, strangely enough, we are both twins and share the same birthday, May 17!

MY LOVE FOR COURTNEY VOL. 1

Over the past few weeks I have fully succumbed to two truths:

1. Summer is withering away slowly but surely.
Today the high is 68 degrees F, low 50.

2. Courtney Love is a rock star fashionista power bitch...
and I love every inch of her craziness. Bottom line is, I'm not here trying to defend her or make excuses for her - simply because I highly enjoy her antics ha! - but more importantly, I'm here to display her confident and unique style, definitely something we could all take a lesson from. These photos depict recent Courtney - anyone can google her 90's grunge-glam outfits, but I wanted to focus on the style-brilliance she brings to us today (2008-2010).

Can you imagine the possibilities if we all had the confidence to dress however the hell we wanted without any inhibitions? Hate her or love her, you have to respect her ability to find special pieces, both designer and vintage, and tune them to her own taste. I think she's brilliant. Too bad she isn't playing any shows around here, I would love to see her in action. I accidentally came across The People vs. Larry Flynt last night on OnDemand, in which Courtney plays Althea Flynt - the wife of Larry Flynt who was stricken with AIDS. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good biopic and/or C.Love. There is so much more to post about her, I can't wait to start collecting more images!

2010 EMMY FAVORITES

I can confidently say that this year's Emmy Awards show has been my favorite thus far. I honestly can't remember any of the past years being this entertaining. I loved every aspect - the Glee-inspired opening, Jimmy Fallon's ability to be hilarious without being obnoxious, the heartfelt and humble acceptance speeches, and not to mention the amazing fashion filling every corner. I watched the pre-show on E!, but it's hard to get a grasp on what someone's wearing from a 1 minute interview, so I think it's always fun to go back and really look at each dress. The ones I chose are my personal favorites, but for very specific reasons...

PERSONALITY IN A PASTE

One of my all time favorite and most inspired movie characters is Clementine Kruczynski (played by Kate Winslet) from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I love her brashness, her impulsiveness, her confidence to wear neon hair and mismatched patterns and textures. I mean Kate Winslet is a pretty huge influence herself, her understated beauty and her incredibly vast range as an actress never fails to blow me away, so considering that I've always wanted to do an "Inspired by" post who better to start with than Clementine? Fall 2010's main trends - bold hues, menswear/military/uniformity, (faux) furs, chunky knits, textured heavy layers - reminded me so much of her character anyway that it's really only fitting. I mean check out these predicted color trends for fall, they scream Clementine right?

None of these items are really considered designer pieces, but that's on purpose because I don't see her as a "high end" person. She likes unique items and bargains! Ha, I love this! WELL WELL WELL, LOOK WHO IT IS.

It's been a while, folks! Since my last outfit post that is. I can't say that this was entirely planned or thought out for that matter, but I figured why not? I promise to start posting more. I really do enjoy doing this, it's just been one of those summers... overwhelming and not necessarily in a good way. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take a big vacation because of personal obligations here at home. I really really wanted to go to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios! I'm a ~~bit of a~~ huge Harry Potter nerd and I'm proud of it! But, I guess I have another 2ish months until school starts. So I could still go. The only problem now... sufficient $$$.

I've never been good with New Year's resolutions because I always just simply forget about them. Personally, I find that the best time to make resolutions is at the beginning of a new school year. With this blasé summer slowly but surely coming to an end and the anticipation of Autumn classes starting up, I have the urge to refresh, renew, and refocus on what's important. I'm the kind of person who doesn't necessarily enjoy being in college. I completely understand its importance and necessity, however, I just want to get out there and work! Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time (and money) in classrooms.

Also, I am totally aware that I have been somewhat absent these last few months. But, I promise to get back on my game soon enough! In an effort to become more involved in this wonderful blogosphere once again, I want to start by mentioning some of my absolute favorite blogs. These four girls in particular (Chiara, Alyssa, Carrie, & Kelly) are wonderfully fashionable, stylistically inspirational, as well as down-to-earth and easy to relate to. I'm so excited that it's finally back!

Ventilation

I wonder if anyone else can relate...
I have realized that I subconsciously put my life on hold for the "sake" of others. I sit around and waste precious time, hoping that other people will eventually come to their senses and realize that I'm important - that they need me. When I say "other people," of course I am talking about some very specific people, but I don't want to bog anyone down with minute details.
Well, I can't do this anymore.
Everyone falls into a funk sometimes - you sleep in a little too late (cough3pmcough), you "forget" to change out of your pajamas, you live off of chocolate and coffee, watching the same three movies on repeat... don't get me wrong, it's lovely to do these things once in a while, but when they start becoming routine that's when things HAVE to change.
I don't mean to be ambiguous or boring, some of you may have no idea what I'm saying. Just for the sake of venting, I needed to get this off my chest. The bottom line is, you must live for yourself. Sure, it's always good to do nice things for others, but living your life entirely for other people - and I mean giving up your own dreams & desires because you're just waiting around - is wrong and unfair to you. Life is too short for other people's ridiculous lackadaisical inconsiderate bullshit.
And that's my 2 cents on that.

Hookahville 2010

Hello friends & followers!

Yes, I have changed the name of my blog to SMASH.

I had what I like to refer to as an epiphany while I was in the shower the other day.
"Rename your blog."
So many people call me that (because my name is SM-Ashley, get it?) so I figured Why Not?
It's still the same topics (of course with a focus on everything Grunge, Glamour & Graphomania).
It's just time for a fresh start.

So anyway. The weekend of May 27-31, I went to Hookahville in Thornfield, Oh.
It's a music festival hosted by the band, Ekoostik Hookah. Other big names this year included Michael Franti and Gov't Mule. It was truly an amazing experience. Thousands of people come together and camp and party for five days and four nights - there isn't one fight or bad attitude. I'm not exaggerating.
It definitely has its similarities to Woodstock. During the Michael Franti show, he brought two people on stage and the man proposed to his girlfriend. Two other people got married in a tent. Everyone dances together and hugs. The police are technically paid to look the other way. Drugs pretty much flow freely. You can walk around with beer cans and cigarettes, without worrying if someone will ask for your ID.
It's fantastic.
But of course, it's all about the love of music.

This is just a portion of the vastness that is Hookahville.

Long Time, No Blog

You guys are probably like... wtf happened to this girl? I promise you, I'm still around. I've just been focusing my blog-attention on my Tumblr. (Sorry to ignore you, Blogspot. No offense.) While this blog is barely creeping it's way up the ladder of success... my tumblr is doing quite well. So can you blame me? Besides, it's hard to do all this blogging when I have 2 papers, 2 exams, my McQueen presentation, and 3 readings to complete before next Thursday.

In a nutshell: Life is hectic, my friends.
My horoscope even suggested that I shouldn't really leave the house or over-exert myself this week because I'll be incredibly busy and stressed out.

I DO, however, want to introduce you guys to LISSIE.

Her voice is off the charts AMAZING. In the words of Rachel Zoe,

"I. DIE." I play her on repeat. She's rock 'n roll, soul, blues... everything I love.

Hola ladies and gents! I am finally back from visiting friends in Indiana and a bout with the stomach flu. So, I apologize for the serious lack in posting - what's been, a week? This is the longest I've gone without posting something, so thanks for sticking with me.

It feels like summer here, well it did last night anyway. (Today it's like 60 degrees and raining, that's Ohio for you.) Last night Sublime played at PromoWest Pavillion in downtown Columbus and I went with some friends. It was bound to be an excellent time - I love the feel and vibe of summery concerts. And since I wasn't one of the luckies who went to Coachella I just pretend like my little downtown sanctuary is up to the same par.

Sublime has a rock/reggae feel so I definitely wanted to somewhat acquire that in my look.
Easy, billowy, sandals, shoulder bag, aviators, jean shorts - done.

Tuesday's Gone

I'm finally feeling better. My allergies got so bad that I finally had to go to the doctor's for a cortisone shot... which is injected into your butt... (tmi?) haha, but it has helped so much! I highly suggest it to anyone with horrendous allergies like mine.

Today is a bit cooler than usual - high 50's, low 60's - so I opted for my boyfriend jeans, which tend to look more like I just rolled up my pants because I'm so short, but I like them. Super comfortable and versatile. An easy, breezy day equals a similar outfit for me.

When I have to run around campus all day (not to mention I still don't feel entirely up to par) I just want to be comfortable first and foremost.

P.S. Happy 42o to all you stoners out there!

Spring has sprung...

... and so have my allergies. This has probably been the worst allergy inflicting Spring that I've experienced. Every morning, besides my puffy eyes and itchy throat, there is a ~~lovely~~ torturous fine layer of dusty yellow pollen covering my car. It's taunting me, I swear.
Anyway, besides my ridiculous allergies, this Spring has been generally warm & sunny so far.
The flowers are finally beginning to bloom and it's sunny enough for sun tanning on the back deck.
Spring reminds me of freshness, newness, and simplicity. And sometimes, simple is just better.

Basically, this is a post to test out my new camera.

If anyone has noticed, I've been lacking on outfit posts as well as pictures of my own lately.

This is because my previous camera (which, for the record, was unbelievably cool) got stolen.

No exaggeration, I was seriously in mourning for the last few days.

But, fortunately I was able to buy a new one and I've got some good ideas,

so I'll get back on track in note time at all.

For my final exam in my fashion class I am doing a project on either Alexander McQueen or Michael Jackson.

The project is on fashion icons and I wanted to choose someone different other than Lady Gaga or Kate Moss.
Not that there is anything wrong with them.

So keep your eyes open for McQueen or MJ posts because I would love to know your thoughts and opinions.

I've been looking for a new jean jacket for what seems like forever and thanks to

Francesca at Le Kiss Kiss, I finally found the perfect one.

I would highly suggest buying one size larger.

It's a little tight and short, but I'm sure after some wear it'll loosen and form to your shape.

Other than that, just look at it! It's amazing and great for spring, because

the weather fluctuates so often. One day it's 80 degrees, the next it's 50 and raining.

I'll take a rockstar style denim over a cowgirl style denim any day.

My mom, of all people, announced to me a few days ago that she ordered this.

I had no idea she even knew about this book.

I asked her, "Do you even know who Derek Blasberg is?"

"Nope, but it was featured on Rachel Zoe's site."

Eh, good enough for me.

From what I can tell so far, it's insightful and informative, extremely witty, and very divergent from traditional books about class.

It's very Blasberg-y, if that makes sense.

Studded Clogs

We bought these last year (my mom & I share shoes)

and I can't, for the life of me, find them on the Free People website.

I linked to their other, equally awesome clogs, though.

I'm down with the clog resurrection.

I lived in them as a little kid (which is one of reasons my mom started calling me a granola)

and I love that they're back in all shapes and sizes.

It's cool if you think they're weird,

but they remind me of gypsies and hippies.

I'm trying my best to embrace pastels, so I thought I'd start with my nails.

The Price of Beauty

Jessica Simpson. Although she certainly comes off as naive and simple-minded at times, I personally find her adorable and funny, and obviously, beautiful. Not only has she designed some pretty kick ass shoes, but I'm proud of her for putting together her new VH1 show that embraces beauty in different cultures all over the world. She has been under so much scrutiny lately about her weight and I feel for her! I understand. It's hard being so short (surprisingly, she's only 5' 3'' like me) because every pound we put on has less space to go - meaning: it shows.

Girl rocks her curves. She looks healthy and happy.

Her show, however, needs some work. It could be so much better than it is. When I say better, I mean more in depth, more informative, more emotional. I understand it's VH1 and not National Geographic or the History Channel, but I don't see how making the content more educational and less... elementary can be a bad thing.

This show vaguely reminds me of a more insightful version of National Lampoon's Family Vacation, except the Griswold's are replaced by Jessica Simpson, her best friend Casee Cobb, and trusted hair stylist turned "gay husband" Ken Paves and they travel all over the world rather than just Vegas and Europe. And personally I love the Family Vacation movies. But we watch them for what? Laughter, happiness, a good time.

I mean The Price of Beauty is funny, it is entertaining and it's clear that these three have great chemistry and feed off each other well.

There is an interesting-factor there as well, but can you imagine just how much more interesting it could be?
I know it's hard to squeeze a ton of information into a 30 minute segment.
I understand that the show embraces Jessica's sense of humor and personal struggles.
I would just like to see something different and more unexpected from her.
Again, I do think this show was a wonderful idea. I just think more people would watch it if it weren't so predictable. She's not as ridiculous as she was in Newlyweds, but there are still hints of that same old airheadedness. But let's be honest, that's what so many people have come to love about Jessica Simpson.

Sadly, for me her show isn't a smash hit.
But, I find that she is easy to relate to, she's honest with good intentions, she's stays shamelessly true to herself, and she's finally coming into her own confidence-wise.
And for that I'll give her two thumbs up, but not necessarily her show.

Simple Easter

I've never been a huge fan of Easter. I've never quite understood what colorful eggs and a giant bunny rabbit have to do with Jesus. Actually, I used to loathe the holiday when I was younger. It meant putting on "your nice clothes," piling 3 kids across one back seat of a Ford Freestyle, and driving 3 hours to Indiana to sit around for a few hours with family just to get back in the car and drive 3 hours home. I feel for all the kids out there who are forced to do that. Bleh.

This year, we stayed right here in Ohio and I couldn't be happier. I stayed in comfy clothes, took my time eating breakfast, calmly looked through all the goodies, bought even more books to add to my shamelessly huge collection, and perused through the new version of iTunes for more movies to rent.

It was a very quiet, easy, relaxed and simple day.

Even though I'm 19 and my sister is 21, my mom woke us up (as if it were Christmas morning) exclaiming the Easter Bunny had come and we were to search for our baskets around the house.

Two new nail polishes from ZOYA. A pale pink and a light shimmery grey.
I've tested both numerous times today.

After a cup of coffee and a Dove chocolate peanut butter egg, my sister and I went to Border's so I could buy two more novels for my Introduction to Fiction class.

And for dinner we had Chinese. So nontraditional, yet still delicious and comforting.
But it does sound like something Miss Golightly would do.

Sometimes you just gotta DIY

I highlighted my own locks. I took a good look at my hair today, realized I was sick and tired of its blah-ness, went to CVS, bought some dye and after lots of patience and about an hour later, VOILA!

It looks pretty good if I do say so myself.

I just got the point where I was tired of waiting around for an overly priced hair appointment just so the woman nitpicking my hair can say, "Oh my gosh you have so much hair!" "You need to condition your ends more." "If you want longer hair, you need to come in way more than you do." "What are all the hair products you use and in what order?"

You're a broken record, lady. I got this one.

I didn't want it to be perfect (which is good because there's no possible way it could have been anyway). I just wanted it to look more natural and free, so I free handed it.

If it turned out too streaky or chunky in certain areas, I decided beforehand that I'd be ok with that. I do what I want, basically ;)

If I were to give advice to anyone who wants to highlight their own hair, I would simply say two things:

- Take your time. Although it gets redundant & your arms start getting sore after a while, it's so worth it to be patient. Slathering the fluff (the dye looked like marshmallow fluff) on too quickly will lead to bleeding and messiness. And nobody wants that.

- Don't expect it to be perfect. Unless you have mad hairstyling skills - but I guess in that case you wouldn't be using a product out of a box - you have to sort of understand that it'll look a little less refined, we'll say.

My dream hair. Slowly but surely my hair will resemble SJP's.

And it may or may not have some blue or purple tips on the journey there.
But that's debatable.
And whilst I debate that, I will stare at this picture and watch Jared Leto and 30 Seconds to Mars cover "Bad Romance" over and over and over...

...this is so cool & sexy as hell. Needed to be shared.

Not to be melodramatic, but I basically fell in love. I'm actually not a huge accessories-wearer. Girl's night out with 2/3 of my best homies.

We wanted to have a free-for-all basically. Let's see where the night takes us kind of attitude.

Campus was dead, everybody's in Panama City, like duuhh!

So we ended up at a bar called Bento. Japanese restaurant by day, party bar by night.

We each dress so differently from one another and it's fantastic.

You've got the "cool high school teacher", the "NYC wannabe", and "Miss America."

I wore the boots! I found a use for them after all.
For the outfit, my mom always taught me: when in doubt, go with black.
I think different textures of black - leather, cotton, lace, etc. - worn together can be interesting.
(You can't tell, but my shirt sleeves are black lace)

I was feeling very Saturday Night Fever with my sparkly cardigan and shiny leggings.

Sometimes nearly empty downtown bars are just better.

There's nothing like a big chunky sweater to throw on over your tiny jean shorts to complement a breezy day. That's why I love spring - it's a combination of warm & cool. I'm also loving the fuchsia lips trend that is happening right now. I know it's hard to tell in this particular picture, but I tried a fuchsia stain to wear out during the day. I patted the lipstick on with my finger and blended it with simple lip balm. I thought it was soft & pretty, but still a bit edgy.

I recorded this video update a couple days ago and after much personal debate, I've decided to grow a pair and share it with you. It's basically a book recommendation/big thank you to all my followers, commenters, and those who take the time to check out my blog. Although I'm brand new to blogspot, I've been making sites for myself since I was 13, but I consider this one much more personal and mature and I sincerely appreciate any/all feedback I receive.
I apologize for the slight crappyness of the quality - this is my first video, after all! They'll get better, no worries.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I can't say that I'm a huge St. Patty's fan - I'd rather stay in than fight my

way through a crowded dirty bar in Ohio. It'd be one thing if it were an actual

Irish pub... but Columbus? eh. We'll see what happens, though.

But March = spring and spring = happiness.

Shorts & sandals & tan legs! Yes!

Anyway, I wanted to introduce to you guys two things:

1. My jean shorts

I've had them since this past summer, they're great.

I basically live in them as soon as the weather gets warm.

Loose, but not baggy. Distressed, but not destroyed. You get the idea.

2. My new fedora

I must have a big head because I bought the M/L size and it's still a little tight.
But it's supposed to morph to your head shape.

I'm loving hats right now. I think they remind me of Erin Wasson.

She wears hats in such a cool way.

I swear she could put a bucket on her head and still look amazing.

Oh, here is something semi-interesting!

I've been searching high and low for the perfect motorcycle boots for months now, no exaggeration. Everywhere around here and even on most online stores have shown me nothing but mediocre knock offs... as if the boots were trying too hard to be motorcycle boots. Like they were too studded or too tough-looking. Does that make sense?

Well my mom brought an ALDO box into my room today - "Ashley, I have a surprise for you!" I opened the box and this what I found.

I promise you I'm not trying to be a brat, because it was so nice of her to take

advantage of their sale and buy something for me she knew I wanted so badly. Of course I said thank you.

But I'm just not sure about them. We hadn't discussed these boots.

The toe is rather pointy and girly-looking, I had envisioned something more rugged.

I just always figured when I saw the perfect ones, I'd know it.

Anyway, I want to know what you guys think.

Hey, Chanel. Sorry to get all radical on you, but...

My twin brother recently sent us a letter from boot camp in South Carolina. My mom apparently told him about the diet we had just finished (and successfully at that, I might add!). Anyway, his response? "Haha! Ashley comes up with a new diet every 2 weeks." This, my friends, is a lie! Ok, not entirely a lie. I merely read things... new diet tips and workout regimens, what the healthiest foods are and how to cook them... etc. and then I morph these tricks into my everyday. Or I try to at least. So, new diet every couple weeks? I think not. I just think it's always good to be 'in the know' when it comes to health (not just fashion!). Even Uncle Karl says that "Fashion is the healthiest motivation for losing weight." And what Karl Lagerfeld says GOES! Ok, I don't know if it's THE healthiest reason, but it's definitely up there in my book. Bottom line: I'm not about dieting, I'm about being healthy.

Speaking of Mr. Lagerfeld and his ideas, I'm a bit conflicted regarding Chanel's Fall 2010 line. It's hard for me to look at these extravagant fur pieces and think beautiful, luxurious, sexy. A few hours ago I posted a very small complaint on my Tumblr about this mass usage of fur, and surprisingly I got a lot of positive feedback. I understand that the fur is fake - I just think it promotes the usage of fur because, real or fake, there is a ton of it in this particular collection.

Do I still think Lagerfeld is a genius? Absolutely.
Am I picking solely on Chanel? Absolutely not.
I realize a ton of designers use fur, REAL FUR at that, I just think this a good, current example of my personal opinions regarding the issue.

Generally, this collection was still brilliant and completely innovative. The pieces not containing fur were incredible, stunning, breathtaking as always. The way the fur was incorporated was clever and gave outfits an edge. Fur skirts, fur pants, complete fur snow suits! Would I wear these pieces? Probably not. To me, there is a definite difference between wearing a faux fur vest and looking like a yeti. And that's just a matter of taste.

If you're at all interested, please read this article regarding Lagerfeld's opinions on fur.
I would actually agree with parts of what he said - there is a lot of hypocrisy in this world.

This is just one girl's opinion, though. I am definitely not about to go throw red paint all over Karl and his clothes, ha. I hold nothing against those who choose to wear real fur. Sorry about the short hiatus! I've had a sick amount of homework - finals are next week! I just wanted to make a quick post to show you all I'm still alive. Expect a much better post soon.

I recently bought this mulberry-ish (purple) nail polish for Spring. So far, I'm liking it.

Normally I'm not a very pastel-y type person, but I'm trying to be more open minded as

far as nail polish colors go. So I need some opinions.

Looking at these pictures, I've come to some (obvious) conclusions about myself. I'm short - 5'3'' to be exact - and I will always be short. I have a booty. I have an athletic frame. I will never be a 5'10'' 100 pound runway model.

And I am so okay with that. I've played sports my entire life - track & field hockey were my strong suits - and I have the body to match. I'm proud of my butt. My mom literally has the flattest bum I've ever seen, so it's sort of hilarious that I'm well endowed in that area.

No matter how you look, I just think it's important to be yourself and dress accordingly.

Those of you who have been following know that I recently finished The Sacred Heart diet. I just wanted it to be understood, that I do not feel I need to shed a ton of weight. I used the diet primarily as a detox. Eating so many fresh fruits and vegetables - just really being conscious of what I'm putting into my body - has made me remember just how important taking care of yourself is. I know I'm young, but I plan on being around for a very long while. I have a huge mind swirling with dreams that I very much plan on fulfilling.

And speaking of taking care of your body - I am never drinking again.

(Let's be honest, I know I will, never say never,

but writing this will hopefully be a good reminder to control myself.)

so I could get up this morning and go to the library all day.

Well, that didn't happen.

maybe I'm feeling guilty about my shenanigans last night? or maybe it's these

I saw the midnight showing of Alice in Wonderland in 3-D last night. It was absolutely fantastic. The visuals are superb, the acting is outstanding, the storyline is, of course, fairytale but with a dark Tim Burton presence. I find it so fascinating the way that man sees the world... not to mention his relationship with Helena Bonham Carter & Johnny Depp. Box office gold right there. I definitely wasn't bored that's for sure. I think these two pictures sum up the movie pretty well...

I went to Disney World over Christmas break and after some major weighing of the pros & cons

we decided to brave the Mad Hatter's Tea Cups. Observe.

Yes we did squeeze five grown people into one tea cup. It hurt. Death by giant spinning tea cup was definitely possible in this case, luckily the ride stopped before this happened.

Although the movie was all-around excellent, I can't say that I'm very partial to

Avril's ~~singing~~ shrieking during the credits. The song starts out pretty... but why

she feels the need to start yelling... I just... don't know.

Spring Trend Artwork

A big statement for Spring 2010 is playing with prints. Maybe I wouldn't necessarily wear them like the runway models featured below (or maybe I would...), but the concept is fun and can take almost any form - girly, hipster, country-chic, rockstar - you can be whoever you want! I feel like the striking and intricate patterns bring about a fantasy aspect, which is almost enchanting because, let's face it, fantasy can be the best escape from reality. Springtime complex prints can certainly take your outfit from boring to exciting with their bold and inspiring colors. They each are their own unique works of art.

Speaking of works of art...

When I was younger I was much more into drawing "people, places & things,"

but now I find myself drawing with an abstract hand, mostly strong lines and shapes.

(which is odd to me because I'm not a structured mathematical-brained
person by any means - I like to think of myself as more whimsical haha)

I start with random lines and shapes and soon a figure takes form.
Putting the pieces together in different ways is just so cool looking to me.

This particular drawing I recently did reminded me so much of

all this wonderful springtime print splendor that's happening,

especially the four outfits I chose above.

I haven't decided if it's finished or not. Sometimes I look at it and
think it needs something else, but when I go to actually incorporate that something,
I get lost. I think I'm scared of ruining it. Hmm...

My attempt at wearing pattern. As you can see it's still horribly BLAH outside,
so dressing all bright & happy just seems... wrong.

Happy March, everyone!

Unfortunately, it's still a gloomy wintry mess here in Ohio,

so I'm praying for happier weather.

Until then I will continue to dress in dark colors to express my sullen attitude.

Haha, not entirely true, I just love black & blue.

I can't help it, I'm addicted to
the black & blue combo.

I catch myself picking out outfits solely based around those two colors without even
realizing what I'm doing.

...it's becoming a totally unconscious, habitual behavior...

Maybe it's my way of protesting against the weather?

Anyway, I really need to work on expanding my color palette.

Ahh! I wish I had more time to write something interesting! I've got a six-page history paper to get started on - due in approx. 18 17 hours!

This is what I wore today "On-The-Go." Not too shabby if I do say so myself. I layered a gray knit vest with my black blazer. Another example of those neutrals I love so much!

I hope everybody's Tuesdays are going well! Mine is super busy, as always. Oh and the diet is going well. Today is nothing but veggies! But I'm already a vegetarian so it's not that bad. Today and the bananas day are the hardest two. I think I can I think I can I think I can...

Annyywayy, I really liked my outfit today so I thought I'd share it with you.

I'm well aware that I wear A LOT of black and blue and that I wear my boyfriend jeans almost everyday. I roll them up and down. But I can't help it, I like my neutrals! What can I say.

I like to think I subconsciously channel a bit of Ashley Olsen when I get dressed. Simple with a twist, some edge, yah know? Or maybe I'm just delusional, but that's ok too.

I love that leather messenger bag. It fits everything I need for school easily plus it's very scholarly, no?

And of course my white converse, which I wear with everything.

In other news, you HAVE to check out these paintings by Kal Gajoum. They are MIND-BLOWINGLY amazing. Think.. rain-soaked-classic-Paris. I would love to witness his process.

Hi, My Name is Ashley and I'm A...

The first step in rehabilitation is admitting you have a problem, right? Well, it seems the time has come to face the music. Hi, my name is Ashley and I am a Lackadaisical-aholic. Yeah that's a good word - lackadaisical. And "aholic" because this is a real problem, ok! (Sorry, I realize that was anticlimactic. No crackheads here, I'm afraid.)

On a more serious note: With Spring just around the corner (meaning a necessary rehabilitation of my body is in order), I have decided to make a personal promise to get healthier. I'm not exactly a lazy bump on a log, but I do sit on my bed day after day working on endless piles of homework.. often leading to a fried brain which equals fried motivation to do anything else. Hey, it's hard to get up and out there in the winter! When it's 15 degrees out and my house & slippers are a much more logical place to be, how can you blame me? But no! Not anymore! It's as good a time as any to just get it over with and start being more active in my life. This whole epiphany I had lead to some nostalgia & remembrance you see because...

Last year, my roommate (who I absolutely love) and I decided to try a bunch of different diets. We didn't necessarily need to... but we were just that bored that often. While surfing the internet for the latest greatest 'Celeb Secret Diet Fads!' we discovered The Sacred Heart Diet... which is actually not a celebrity-spotlight-diet... YET. After three or so days we noticed definite changes, it was really exciting. I even recommended it to my grandma who I swear has tried every diet known to man. She lost 7 lbs in four days, not even kidding you.

Now, I realize I don't need to lose a drastic amount of weight and I am in NO WAY saying this diet is perfect for everyone. I just think for me - right now - it's a productive way to jumpstart a healthier style.

♥ For all those interested:

Day 1 - any fruits (except bananas) only soup & fruit today

Day 2 - all vegetables and soup / baked potato with butter for dinner

Day 3 - all fruit, veggies & soup you want / no potato

Day 4 - bananas & skim milk (soup too)

Day 5 - beef* & tomatoes (soup too)

Day 6 - beef* & veggies to heart's content (soup too)

Day 7 - brown rice, veggies & fruit juice until full

* I am changing the beef to fish on my own accord because I do not eat any meat besides the occasional fish.

♥ Soup Recipe can be found by clicking the above link. You're supposed to be able to eat as much of it as you want. It's supposed to be the secret calorie-burner - I don't know if that's necessarily true but HEY it's more food.

♥ Drinks Allowed: unsweetened fruit juice, tea, coffee, cranberry juice, skim milk, lots of water!

Insomnia equals Book Reccomendations

I have the worst time falling asleep at night. Of course, any time during the day I can take a nap like a pro, but as soon as nighttime rolls around it's like my eyelids are being held open by invisible tape. So, I find things to do.

Currently, I'm frustrated with my horrendous amount of schoolwork. I have so much to do that I don't have time to even crack the covers of my newly bought novels. (Thus, I have banned myself from Barnes & Noble because I can't go in there without buying something.) I have at least 5 books - note: in order to suppress my shame, I have not literally counted - that need to be indulged upon and I actually feel bad! I love to read, I love being a book nerd, I pride myself in that. I enjoy being able to recommend and discuss novels.

So last night, as I routinely lay awake surfing the net & TV channels, I decided to go through my shelves and choose SOME of my favorite books to recommend to you all. I will continue to choose and discuss more over time, because trust me.. if I did them all at once you'd probably hate me. Nobody likes a rambling idiot!

I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie

Pamela des Barres

I have always been in love with rock music and the eras which glorified it the best. Consequently, I have always been fascinated by the lifestyles of rock stars and groupies. After reading this autobiography, I became utterly obsessed with Miss Pamela. She describes every intimate detail from who she's "hooked up" with (Jim Morrison, Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger, Keith Moon, Noel Redding, Chris Hillman.. the list goes on) to the intense feelings and situations she was often confronted with (such as babysitting for Frank Zappa or the death of her beloved Gram Parsons). Sex, drugs & rock and roll for sure. She has an incredible, exciting story to tell. Whether positive or negative, I can guarantee you'll have definite strong opinions after reading this.

Front Row at the White House: My Life and Times

Helen Thomas

I chose to read this book last year for a project in my Intro. to Journalism class. Once many people saw what I was reading they were either astounded or confused. See, Helen Thomas is sort of known not only for her age (she's been a White House reporter for AGES) but also for her extreme left-leaning ideals. I was a little worried that this book would be outrageously radical after hearing everyone's criticisms, but this is a great example of 'DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.' Helen Thomas, "radical" or not, is a legend in her own right. She's worked in the White House Press Corp through eight administrations and her stories are personal and thorough rather than just blah historical blabber. It certainly inspired me to head down the Political Science road at one point (but I soon realized that I didn't exactly see myself in Hilary-esque pastel skirt-suits with my hair in a french twist.. not that I'm stereotyping females in the political arena or anything..)

Major Tales and Poems

Edgar Allan Poe

Everybody recognizes the eeriness, agony, and depression that is Poe. This book is special to me because it's a challenge just to get through one passage and who doesn't like a challenge! I became intrigued by Poe in 7th grade English when we started analyzing his more popular works just to get the basic idea of his ~~process~~ madness. Yeah he's scary and dark and creepy, but his pieces are compelling and will without a doubt arouse some type of intense feelings. Plus, you'll improve your vocabulary. For example: Poe often uses labyrinthine-like words. I'm especially haunted by The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Raven.

Kafka on the Shore

Haruki Murakami

The philosophic novels of Murakami seem to have become a celebrity "fad" these days. I feel like I can't flip through a magazine or sit through an E! news segment without some celebrity saying they "totally die for Haruki Murakami's books!" I discovered him a couple years ago while rummaging through the Literature section of Border's.. not very glamorous, I guess. This was my first Murakami novel and I'll be honest, my initial feelings involved a lot of confusion and disappointment. Kafka on the Shore relates a story of a boy trying to find himself, so I didn't quite understand what talking cats, raining fish, and sexual ghosts had to do with it. He tends to be vague in his explanations. I soon realized, however, that that's just him - he does it on purpose. It's like he wants you to make your own assumptions from his writing. Of course, you can Google an in-depth analysis of any one of his books to get more accurate meanings, but it's sort of fun to try to figure out why he writes what he does. I've bought three more since.

gonna join in a rock and roll band

Gooood evening! Tonight was a night of awesome music and I thought it had to be shared. I went to a concert downtown to see my best friend's brother and his band Under the Sun. Basically it's pure psychedelic/funk//jazzyness and therefore, I have to say, there was a lot of crazy hippie groovin tonight.. and trust me, you do not want to get in their way. They are in such a trance they'll whack you right across the face with their 3 foot dreads and not even notice. Intense stuff.

You don't have to tell me that I'm an impressive dancer, I already know. I got it from my mama. Oh and please note my crazy dog who just lays there and stares at the ground. He's senile but I love him.
(I was dancing to Woodstock by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. It's such a great song.)

Well, we completely missed their performance because apparently they only played for an hour. The band they opened for, however, surprised me and turned out to be really good. Check out LOTUS. They don't sing at all, it's just a lot of what they like to call "vibes," but it's pretty cool stuff - great to dance to. And really, the great thing about it is you can literally dance however you damn well please because I can guarantee that you will still not be the most outrageous person in the room.

I'll be honest...

I am over the snow.

It was pretty and fun for the first two maybe three days, but that's really all I can handle.. and it's been weeeeks now! I've had to miss class again today because driving down to campus is just too unsafe - especially for someone like me who considers driving a dangerous chore. (I just wasn't born to drive, but that's another story.)

Oh thanks to the snow this weekend - this would be fantastic Saturday night that I was supposed to have - I slipped in the kitchen AT THE LACROSSE TEAM'S HOUSE and broke myself.
I didn't realize at the time.. for various reasons.. just how hurt I was. Now I have a bruised and swollen collar bone, I can't raise my right arm passed a certain point, and my right hip is completely bruised.
So in a nutshell: I'm snowed in stuck in bed with a broken body. Haha oh my life.
I do love my dogs in the snow though. That's one happy thing amongst all this venting.
So greetings from Ohio! I'm willing to share this snow, so feel free to take it.

Happy Saturday!

After what has seemed weeks of nothing besides endless tedious piles of schoolwork and studying for exams, I finally have a free day!

← This is my sitting-through-class, running-errands, or even laying-in-bed-blogging outfit, which I wear variations of quite often. Because, let's be honest, those are all the things I've been doing nothing but for some time now. But today (since it's FREE time) I went to get an afternoon smoothie.. hardcore, I know.
♪ If you're like me when it comes to jeans - you hate shopping for them, you hate how they fit that certain area - but my Calvin Klein boyfriend jeans are so damn comfortable I practically live in them. I'm also a shorty, and they accommodate that as well... meaning they don't make me feel like even more of a midget.

Mary Kate & Ashley have done it again! This time they've created an extremely affordable line for JC Penny's called Olsenboye. Inspired by unique seasonal fashion-oriented cities around the world including New York City, Los Angeles, and London, each stylish piece is made to mix and match with another. At first glance, it may seem like the line is directed toward "tweens" (I hate that word) but really there are pieces for just about anybody. Recently I purchased the Boyfriend Blazer and the Boxy Screen Tee. Both are fantastic pieces to pair with other Olsenboye products as well as other brands all together. The items are made from cotton and they're all washable so they're pretty much made for comfort and today = snow day so the over-sized tee arrived just in time to be lounged around in.
♪ You'll find that I have an ever-growing affinity for the Olsen twins - I pay a lot of attention to their business, we'll say. You know you've had that frustrating moment in the morning when your bedroom floor is covered with clothes because you can't find just a plain tee shirt or sweater to throw on. I just think it's pretty genius of them to focus their lines (designer labels and affordable apparel alike) around BASICS.

Monday Study Day

My first post since the reconstruction of the page. So as as Welcome Back I figured I would just post a preview of my day. Note: I do often get fully dressed even if I'm just studying because I find that there's more of a chance I'll fall asleep if I study in sweats or pajamas.

♪ Today I had a 5:30pm statistics test & then an online fashion design quiz, which meant an entire day devoted to studying. I've been drinking a lot of tea lately but I had to go straight for the coffee in order to get my game face on for all of this...
